Job Description
Physician, under indirect supervision, provides and manages direct medical evaluation,
diagnosis, procedures, and care for patients within a recognized area of practice in Sedgwick
County Hospital and/or the Valley Medical Clinics of Julesburg, Big Springs, or Chappell.
Oversight may also potentially include the care of residents living in our Long-Term Care
Facilities; an Assisted Living Center and Non-Skilled Nursing Home. Privileges will not exceed
those described and outlined in the professional scope of practice as defined by the State of
Colorado. Physicians must meet the requirements of the specific specialty for which they are
applying.
Core Responsibilities
Perform primary care services in a clinical setting. Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as x
rays or blood tests. Diagnose a patient’s injury or illness. Provide treatment, such as setting
broken bones, stitching wounds, and immunizing patients. Educate and counsel patients and
their families, as applicable on a variety of issues.
Perform medical screening examinations and initial treatment of patients of all ages, except
where specifically excluded from practice, presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with
minor illness and injury, under the supervision of the ED physician. Care of non-minor cases
presenting to the ED requires direct supervision and involvement by the ED physician. Counsel,
educate and instruct patients, families, and caregivers as appropriate. Make daily rounds on
hospitalized patients.

Admit, evaluate, diagnose, and provide non-surgical treatment to patients of all ages for basic
allergy, arthritis, cardiac, collagen, gastrointestinal, hematological, hepatic, metabolic,
endocrine, musculoskeletal, neurologic, pulmonary, renal, vascular diseases, burns not
exceeding second degree or 10% of the body surface, and chemotherapy management after
initial oncology consultation.
Additional Responsibilities
• Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations,
assessments, diagnoses, and treatment for a specified patient population.
• Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate
to assessed medical conditions.
• Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
• Trains and supervises medical students and residents engaged in specialty activities and
procedures, as appropriate.
• May manage the daily operations of a specific medical program, patient care unit, or
research function.
• Directs and coordinates the patient care activities of nursing and support staff as
required.
• Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous
quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control
standards.
• As appropriate to the position, participates in specified health promotion, education
and/or prevention programs.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Serves on appropriate committees.
• Makes effective recommendations to the Chief of Medical Staff regarding the
improvement of their own department/medical staff.
• Attends classes, in-services, and meetings as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned within a timely manner.
• Attending staff meetings and participate as appropriate.
Knowledge and Skills
• Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
• Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
• Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of
medical expertise.
• Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of
expertise.

prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.

Working Environment
• Works varying hours in Valley Medical Clinic and Sedgwick County Memorial Hospital
(IP, OP, ED), including evenings and weekends, as needed.
o This position is a 7 on, 7 off block schedule role. While on 7 days, provider will be
on 7 24-hour continuous call shifts for the emergency department and inpatient
floor as the hospitalist. 3 of the 7 days the physician will only need to provide
back up support to APPs, who will take 1st call to provide relief during the 7 day
block. Because ED volumes are low (4-5 daily avg), and average daily census in
the hospital is low (ADC of 2), physician is expected to see urgent care cases in
the clinic, but will not have a full clinic caseload on days that they are 1st call.
• Endures stressful emergency situations when a patient is seriously ill or badly injured.
• Faces high pressure situations when large volumes of patients must be seen and treated
in the course of a day.
• Risks exposure to airborne diseases and contaminated body fluids.
Physical Demands
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to assist transferring a patient weighing
200+ pounds. Must be able to perform frequent bending, crouching, grasping, handling,
kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing reaching, stooping, twisting, and transferring.
Experience
• 2-4 years of relevant job experience preferred.
• Experience providing primary care and diagnostic services in a clinical setting.
• Experience providing emergency care and diagnostic services in an emergency
department.
Qualifications & Requirements
1) Applicant must have received an MD or DO degree from an approved school of
medicine or osteopathy. Licensed as an MD or DO in the State of Colorado.
2) Applicant must have completed an approved internship and residency program,
approved by the American Board of Family Medicine.

3) Applicant must hold board certification or become certified within five years of
completion of residency training by an appropriate specialty board AND
4) Documentation of current competence (evidence of providing patient care to at least 60
patients during the last 24 months.

6) Current CPR, BLS, ATLS & ACLS Certifications
